EPortfolios for Integrative Learning and Program Assessment Over the past few years, electronic or ePortfolios have emerged as a useful tool for assessing both individual student change over time and program impacts (Buyarski & Landis, 2014; Fitch et al., 2008). As Clark and Eynon (2009) noted, ePortfolios allow. Using a career e-portfolio in your job search is one more way you can showcase your skills and abilities to prospective employers. Whether or not you completed the INFO 289 e-portfolio class, you can still create a career e-portfolio that will showcase your strengths, help you get that interview, and perhaps even help you land the job. This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basic concepts and ideas of chemistry and demonstrates how they are applicable to every day processes. The basic knowledge of chemical principles and scientific literature developed in this course will allow students to read about science and technology with some degree of critical judgment. Students access an extensive video library, interactive challenges, and assessments from any computer with access to the web. Coaches, parents, and teachers have unprecedented visibility into what their students are learning and doing on the Khan Academy. This is a good ice-breaking technique for early in the term. It’s also an easy way to make large classes interactive and encourages more students to participate than regular question strategies. Use the offerings of students after think-pair sharing to lead into a lecture or discussion of class material.

What are They?

A useful way of evaluating learners' deep learning can happen through having students write blog posts (reflections on learning) or create a portfolio (collection of reflections and examples of work) or build a website (collection of learning examples). All three of these activities can be done with a blogging platform - like VIUBlogs (powered by the software WordPress).

Blogs provide a reflective space for students to record their thoughts, ask questions, engage in debate and participate in a community which extends well beyond the walls of the physical classroom. A major feature of blogs is the ability for other online readers to discuss, comment on, create links to, and share the content found on the blog. Comments are usually added to each individual entry are often left in a conversational manner. The writer of the blog can then read and respond to comments. The afforded levels of interaction available on blogs can be likened to a sort of online social activity as students can read one another’s blog and provide feedback in a conversational manner.

Ideas for using blogs in your class:

1. Create a course blog to communicate regularily with your students and invite comments
2. Have students create their own blogs to reflect on the course material and engage with one another
3. Have students create their own blogs and invite guest practitioners in to comment on students reflections
